A good laser cutting enquiry starts with complete, unambiguous information, not at the machine.
Missing material, sheet thickness, quantities or an unambiguous drawing lead to questions. This takes time and complicates scheduling. This overview explains the information engineering and procurement teams should provide for prompt feasibility assessment and costing.
An unambiguous manufacturing file
A clean DXF file is particularly useful for flat laser-cut parts. For bent or more complex components, also provide a STEP model or technical drawing.
Files must reflect the current design revision and be clearly named. Where several versions exist, include the revision directly in the file name or drawing.
Specify the exact material
Simply stating 'steel' is often insufficient for reliable costing. An exact designation is preferable, such as S235JR, S355, 1.4301 or a specified aluminium alloy.
Include any special requirements for finish, certificates or batches in the initial enquiry.
State the material thickness
Material thickness affects cutting time, material cost, edge quality and possible further processing. It must be clearly specified for every component.
Further technical details are available on our page about subcontract laser cutting service.
Quantity for each component
Whether a one-off, prototype, small batch or repeat production run, quantity determines material utilisation, setup work and cost-effective manufacturing.
For repeat demand, an annual quantity and required batch size are also useful.
Identify tolerances
Not every dimension needs the same tolerance. Clearly identify fits, datum surfaces, hole patterns and other functionally important dimensions.
This allows manufacturing to assess specifically whether the required result is achievable with the intended process.
Specify further processing
Laser cutting is often only the first production stage. State at the outset whether the component then needs bending, welding, grinding, pickling, powder coating or assembly.
We manufacture bent parts on a CNC press brake with up to 3,200 mm bend length and 200 tonnes of pressing force. Find out more under subcontract CNC bending service.
Finish and visible face
The required finish is particularly important for stainless steel, aluminium and visible components. State whether protective film is required, which face will be visible and whether grain direction or surface appearance is specified.
Include required coatings and colours in the enquiry too.
Specify the delivery date
Give the required delivery date as precisely as possible. For production runs or framework orders, call-off quantities and planned intervals are also useful.
We assess the date alongside material availability, manufacturing scope and current capacity.
Inspections and certificates
If material certificates, inspection reports, welding documentation or specific quality evidence are required, these requirements must be known before quoting.
Documentation requirements added later can affect cost and lead time.
